Although the Council regards the provision of a school crossing patrol service as an important contribution to the safety of children in County Durham, this provision is a permissive function rather than a statutory obligation of the council and it must be appreciated that parental responsibility is in no way diminished by the exercise of this service.

Therefore, until a new permanent patrol is appointed, we continue remind parents & carers to exercise care when sending their children to school and for students to be extra vigilant when crossing the road.

If you are interested, or know of anyone else who would be interested in carrying out this worthwhile duty, please contact the Road Safety Team for an informal discussion on 03000 268171 or apply directly via the Council website: [closing date 21.10.202020]
