20th March 2020 - 19:00 We have just received another update from DfE - please access.

From Friday 20 March schools, childcare and other educational settings are closed for everyone except:

children of critical workers & vulnerable children

Please see published guidance for parents and carers:

Critical workers

If parents’ work is critical to the coronavirus response, their children will be prioritised for early years and education provision.

The Government has published a list of critical workers:

Consett Academy will close indefinitely at the end of Friday 20th March 2020. Government advice published early this morning states:

If children can stay safely at home, they should, to limit the chance of the virus spreading. That is why the government has asked parents to keep their children at home, wherever possible, and asked schools to remain open only for those children who absolutely need to attend.

… the fewer children making the journey to school, and the fewer children in educational settings, the lower the risk that the virus can spread and infect vulnerable individuals in wider society.

Schools are, therefore, being asked to continue to provide care [not education] for a limited number of children - children who are vulnerable and children whose parents are critical to the Covid-19 response and cannot be safely cared for at home.

Therefore, on Monday 23rd March 2020, students attending the Academy, between the hours of 8.00am and 3.00pm, should:

  • Attend in full school uniform
  • Bring their PE kit
  • Adhere to our usual high expectations regarding behaviour and attitudes
  • Follow their ‘normal’ timetable and work set via the VLE

Confirmation that Durham County Council have instructed their operators to provide a normal scholars service from Monday 23rd March.  During next week they will then match the service with the demand required for key workers etc and may adjust the services accordingly.

As far as we know, all School Crossing Patrols will be operating but we ask students to take the usual care when travelling to and from the Academy.

19th March 2020 - Following the statement made by the government yesterday evening we are currently working on our plan to ensure that we can support all vulnerable children and ‘key workers’ children from the Academy.  We are awaiting confirmation as to the definition of ‘Key Workers’ from the Government and hope to be able to provide further information later this afternoon.  If however you fall into this category and would like to send you child into the Academy, then please drop them off at the usual times in school uniform.

We will be updating all parents via a letter later this afternoon.  Many thanks for your support at this time.

For some time now, I have been receiving regular updates from DfE and the Local Authority. I would like to reassure you that we have fully acted upon all advice given and continue to reinforce these messages on a daily basis to both staff and students.
