U15’s Cricket team

Congratulations to Consett U15’s Cricket team who are County Durham Champions!

Game 1
86/7 Teesdale
97/3 Consett

Consett selected to bowl and quickly began tearing into the Teesdale upper order. A gargantuan effort from Katie S, who finished with figures of 4/10, ensured Teesdale were restricted to 86/7. In reply, Consett started steadily. The upper order (Rebecca E, Katie S, Leah P and Sophie S) all retired on high scores, and, after a calculated and relatively risk free batting performance ensured they surpassed the Teesdale total, finishing on 97/3.

Game 2
62/3 Northfield
100/4 Consett

Northfield were the only team between Consett and the final. Selecting the bowl again, Rebecca E recovered from a nervy start and settled her team. The girls were outstanding in the field and Northfield were strangled throughout the innings finishing on 62/4. Consett knew the game was their’s to lose and a few errors of judgement almost let Northfield back in the game. After Jess B’s wicket fell to a great catch, Consett still had 28 more runs to get in 5 overs. However, Maheen H, Jess C and Kate A were just the support Rebecca E needed as she sealed the game with a rapid 43 not out. Consett secured their place in the final with a total of 100/6.

The Final

St Wilfrid RC v Consett Academy

What a match! Consett bowled first for the third time and sticked to the tactics that had served them so well in the group stages. In the second over of the match St Wilfrid’s were rocked by outstanding fielding, as Katie S took pace off the ball, and the batswomen we left perplexed. After 4 overs St Wilfrid’s had stumbled to 35/5. However, a solid performance from their lower order proved significant. Running aggressively, they powered their way through the second half of the innings to 94/6.

In reply, Consett knew they had to take some calculated risks. However, Katie S found herself run out first ball of the chase. In came Leah P, and the two steadied the ship to just about keep the girls in the game. At the halfway stage Consett were 39/1. When Rebecca E and Leah both retired, the lower order tried to shift the momentum in their favour. However, with 3 overs left and after a collapse they found themselves 59/6. St Wilfrid’s smelt blood. Leah P and Rebecca E returned to the crease and what followed stunned the several spectators. Against all odds, Captain Rebecca E began to tear the bowling to pieces. Despite bowling an excellent line and length, ball after ball was fired into the upper tier of the stand. Six followed six followed six. Supported well by a professional performance from Leah P, Rebecca E won the match with time remaining. They finished on 128/6. What an innings! What a match! What a team!

Consett Academy, County champions! Bolton next for the Regional Final, and a chance to play at Lords.
