What is an Academy?

•Academies are publicly funded independent local schools that provide free education.

•There are two types of academy – sponsored (by education, business, faith or voluntary groups and converter (former local authority controlled schools).

•Academies are able to offer their own curriculum which sits outside the ‘National Curriculum’ so that they can respond to the needs of the students in their local community.

•As well as providing the best opportunities for the most able pupils and those needing additional support, academies have a key part to play in the regeneration of disadvantaged communities by focussing their resources where they are needed most.
