Year 10 Football - 1.5.13
Consett Academy 2 v’s North Durham Academy 0
Consett Academy won a hard fought league game against North Durham Academy. On a fantastically sunny afternoon, the team played out a scoreless first half that wasn't short of chances a both ends. In second half Consett up the quality of the passing and pressing game and created two excellent long-range chances. The first was taken by Mitchell Waddell, who with the help of a goalkeeper fumble, scored midway through the second half. The second goal way right out of the top draw, a 25 yard screamer from Jack Platten, that nestled into the inside of the far post. A really good result that puts the team well on the way to winning the league for a second consecutive year.
Title Contenders Held to Draw
Y9 Consett Academy 3 – 3 Y9 St Bede’s
Storey (2), Little (Pen 25, 45)
The Y9 football team were involved in a thrilling match at North Campus on Wednesday night. It was most definitely a game of two halves with the wind having a major effect on both teams’ defences.
Consett started well with Shea R-Hill buzzing about the midfield and putting St Bede’s under real pressure, the ball eventually broke to Michael Storey on the right wing who scored and absolute worldy from 35 yards into the keeper’s top left hand corner. The jury is out on whether he meant it or not!
The second came in controversial style as there appeared to be a trip on Matthew Burns only for the defender to claim he got the ball. Adam Little then stepped up and coolly put the ball beyond the keeper high into the top right hand corner.
Consett then went 3-0 up at the start of the second half with a brilliant team goal culminating in a delicious cross from Matthew Burns to put it on a plate for Adam Little to score his second of the game with a far post header.
Things then went from bad to worse as Consett conceded 3 quick goals at the end of the second half. The last a foul just inside the box that resulted in a penalty to St Bede’s with 2 minutes left on the clock.
In the last 30 seconds of the match Matthew Burns had the chance to win it for Consett, latching onto a through ball he lobbed the keeper only for some last gasp defending on the line by the covering centre half to keep the scores at 3-3.
Consett Academy now have the title in their sights and can secure top spot with a win and only a win against Tanfield at home on Friday, North Campus 4pm Kick off.
Year 9/10 & 11 Netball - Update 24.4.13
After a long season that has seen a number of games snowed off, Consett Academy finally got their remaining netball fixtures played. The year 10 team consisting of Caitlin, Jenny, Lucy, Faye, Bethan, Keira and Nicole got off to a flying start gaining a 6-1 lead at half time. They then cemented their victory with a further 5 goals in the second half to make the final score Consett Academy 11 Hermitage 1.
The year 9 team were at a disadvantage with a player down before the match even started, but a 3-3 scoreline a half time was looking promising. The team of Melissa, Beth, Alice, Grace, Molly and Chloe came out fighting, but with 1 minute to go at 3-5 down things were not looking good. Some spectacular attacking play, and some great shooting from Chloe and Molly in the closing stages meant that at full time Consett Academy gained another fantastic victory 6-5. Well done ladies!
