Take 8 talented year 7 and 8 girls, add a dash of skill and combine together to form a highly successful Under 13 cricket team.

The girls - sisters Rosie and Lily Grant, twins Stephanie and Erika Leonard, Olivia Winter, Nicole Atkinson, Katie Egglestone and Chloe Craig started on their road to success by winning the Derwentside and Chester le Street Level 2 league to become district champions.

The team were then selected to represent the District at the County Durham Sport - Level 3 Games held at Maiden Castle on Friday 4th July.

Here they came up against the most talented teams from the county. During the gruelling day, the girls played with skill, precision and flair to beat every team in the tournament. In the final they came up against a highly polished Durham Johnston squad but their competitive edge shone through to result in victory for Consett Academy.

The girls were awarded their gold medals by Commonwealth and Olympic swimmer Chris Cook.

Year 7 Girls Football Champions

Our Year 7 Girls Football Team won a county event held at Maiden Castle in Durham on Wednesday 2nd July. They played against teams across the county and beat Durham Johnston 2:0 on penalty's in the final. The girls performed brilliantly and were a credit to the Academy. Team players .....

Lauren Mitcheson, Ellie Smith, Charlotte Davison, Megan Hall, Elise Tilley, Katie Pointer, Katy Lewins, Sophie Greaves and Bethany Welsh.

Special mention must go to Megan Hall who  scored eleven goals in eight games and Elise Tilley made two saves during the final penalty shoot out.

District Cricket tournament – Tuesday 3rd July

The District Tournament was a competition held between five teams to decide who would progress into the County Finals. Consett Academy entered two teams and each had to play four games.

Consett A’s first game was against Tanfield who we beat convincingly when they only hit 42 runs. We comfortably made the target of 43 to win. Our next game was against North Durham Academy who we were playing for the first time. Our confidence was high with our earlier victory although NDA did hit a challenging score of 70. However, our innings started slowly and we managed to leave ourselves 16 to win in the last over. Jordan Kelly saved the day for Consett Academy by hitting four boundaries in the last over narrowly edging us to to the win.

The penultimate game was against St Bedes who skittled us out for only twelve runs with no Consett player getting into double figures! That left the ‘local derby ‘ of Consett A v Consett B. Consett B batted first making a score that was in the low twenties. Consett A went on to win convincingly leaving them in a bowl off to hit the wicket with NDA and St Bedes to see who would go forward to the county finals. Unfortunately, Consett A’s luck deserted them and NDA were the only team who were on target.

Mr Woodhouse and the team were left to reflect on what could have been, but their fairytale ending this time.

The competition was held at Maiden Castle in Durham where teams across Durham came to compete. The girls took part in group three where they came runners up. They missed out on the semi-finals by goal difference. The girls competed well, played good football, scored some great goals and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The team scored nine goals from four matches with Lauren Mitcheson scoring five. Credit must be given to all of the girls who showed good behaviour and attitude when representing the Academy.

Unfortunately they didn’t win the competition but they should be pleased with how they performed.

The competition was held at North Campus. Consett Academy entered two teams into the competition, and they were joined by two teams from High Tunstall School (Hartlepool) and one team from St Cuthberts School (Gateshead). Summer School Games Rugby 7’s Report July 2013

The Consett Academy Year 10 boys Rugby 7’s team finished 3rd out of seven other teams at the Durham School Games this year. It is important to note that the Games represent the finest teams across all of county Durham and the students at the Academy were not only representing the Academy, but notably the entire Derwentside area.

The team led by the Year 9 County Durham Rugby ace Reece Fowkes showed imagination and flair leading the team to four victories against powerful and speedy opposition. Notable scalps included victories against Denes School, Parkside School and King James School, narrowly missing out on the Silver medal 2nd place after a last minute try from Parkview ending the game 15 – 10.

Outstanding displays came from Jack Taylor who dominated the contact areas and scrimmaging. Liam Scorer who true to name scored five tries and Matthew Softley who was the opposite of soft in all the contact areas during the matches.

Our Year 10 girls Rugby 7’s team also qualified and represented both the Academy and Derwentside at the Games. Many of the girls were playing in their first ever 7’s contact tournament.

They displayed extreme resilience and bravery during all matches finishing fourth in the tournament. A big well done to all the students involved and good luck in preparing for next year’s tournament.

Boy’s Cricket Update July 2013

After a long hard cold winter of indoor practicing, our boys eventually got the opportunity to play some competitive outdoor cricket in the summer term. The first hard ball competition amongst the Derwentside schools for several years, the Academy had representations at the under 13’s and under 15’s competitions. Two glorious days as The Lintz CC and Consett CC respectively saw the lads involved in two twenty over matches.  Both teams more than held their own, coming a close second to St Bede’s of Lanchester on both days. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the day and were a credit to the Academy, displaying characteristics of competiveness and sportsmanship. All the lads agreed that winter practices would start even earlier next year to aim to go one step better next year.

Year 10 Rounders Update June 2013

The year 10 girls rounders team of Ellen Hall, Nicole Wilson, Jenny Hall, Keira Phillips, Rachel Pearson, Lucy Widdows, Lowri Clutton-Dowell and Natalie Gribbin beat Tanfield 16-13 ½ to win the annual rounders tournament. With a player down from the start the girls had to work extra hard, and when another had to leave before the end we were down to 7 players. But some great teamwork and fielding skills stopped Tanfield getting the rounders they needed to win, giving our girls the victory. Well done ladies!”

Cricket Success – 13.5.13

Consett Academy’s year 7/8 girls cricket team smashed St Bedes.

The team consisting of Erica Leonard, Stephanie Leonard, Olivia Winter, Rosie Grant, Katie Egglestone, Nicole Atkinson, Chloe Wilson, Amelia Grimes, Olivia Gibson and Devon Hewitson thoroughly deserved their top ranking after some great performances from all involved.

The girls have now qualified for the county finals on June 28th and the school games on July 5th – well done ladies!

Year 10 Football - 1.5.13

Consett Academy 2 v’s North Durham Academy 0

Consett Academy won a hard fought league game against North Durham Academy.  On a fantastically sunny afternoon, the team played out a scoreless first half that wasn't short of chances a both ends.  In second half Consett up the quality of the passing and pressing game and created two excellent long-range chances.  The first was taken by Mitchell Waddell, who with the help of a goalkeeper fumble, scored midway through the second half. The second goal way right out of the top draw, a 25 yard screamer from Jack Platten, that nestled into the inside of the far post.  A really good result that puts the team well on the way to winning the league for a second consecutive year.

Title Contenders Held to Draw

Y9 Consett Academy 3 – 3 Y9 St Bede’s

Storey (2), Little (Pen 25, 45)

The Y9 football team were involved in a thrilling match at North Campus on Wednesday night. It was most definitely a game of two halves with the wind having a major effect on both teams’ defences.

Consett started well with Shea R-Hill buzzing about the midfield and putting St Bede’s under real pressure, the ball eventually broke to Michael Storey on the right wing who scored and absolute worldy from 35 yards into the keeper’s top left hand corner. The jury is out on whether he meant it or not!

The second came in controversial style as there appeared to be a trip on Matthew Burns only for the defender to claim he got the ball. Adam Little then stepped up and coolly put the ball beyond the keeper high into the top right hand corner.

Consett then went 3-0 up at the start of the second half with a brilliant team goal culminating in a delicious cross from Matthew Burns to put it on a plate for Adam Little to score his second of the game with a far post header.

Things then went from bad to worse as Consett conceded 3 quick goals at the end of the second half. The last a foul just inside the box that resulted in a penalty to St Bede’s with 2 minutes left on the clock.

In the last 30 seconds of the match Matthew Burns had the chance to win it for Consett, latching onto a through ball he lobbed the keeper only for some last gasp defending on the line by the covering centre half to keep the scores at 3-3.

Consett Academy now have the title in their sights and can secure top spot with a win and only a win against Tanfield at home on Friday, North Campus 4pm Kick off.

Year 9/10 & 11 Netball - Update 24.4.13

After a long season that has seen a number of games snowed off, Consett Academy finally got their remaining netball fixtures played. The year 10 team consisting of Caitlin, Jenny, Lucy, Faye, Bethan, Keira and Nicole got off to a flying start gaining a 6-1 lead at half time. They then cemented their victory with a further 5 goals in the second half to make the final score Consett Academy 11 Hermitage 1.

The year 9 team were at a disadvantage with a player down before the match even started, but a 3-3 scoreline a half time was looking promising. The team of Melissa, Beth, Alice, Grace, Molly and Chloe came out fighting, but with 1 minute to go at 3-5 down things were not looking good. Some spectacular attacking play, and some great shooting from Chloe and Molly in the closing stages meant that at full time Consett Academy gained another fantastic victory 6-5. Well done ladies!

Year 9 Durham Schools Rugby Championship - 23.4.13

Consett Academy Year 9 Rugby Team went against the six best and brightest Rugby teams across Durham County on Tuesday. They were all praised by the RFU coaches, staff and other schools for their discipline both on and off the pitch, alongside their sportsmanship and resilience throughout every match.

During the tournament there were some outstanding displays of courage and bravery with over 40 points being scored over the three matches played. Having made it to the shield competition, they eventually went out to Thornhill School by six tries to three.

Outstanding displays of effort and achievement go to Rugby Captain Reece Fowkes who led by example scoring seven tries, three of which were scored running the entire field. Joe Coleman and Keegan Wilkinson who showed outstanding strength in the scrum, pushing all teams back over one meter, and Liam Scorer, who true to name scored a try himself. Well done!
