Individualised Study Programme

At interview, students will be advised about which subjects and combination of courses will best prepare them for their future career plans based upon their interests, ambitions and ability. The following table shows the curriculum pathways students can follow, and the grades students will need to achieve in the summer to be able to choose that pathway.

Advanced Achievers Study Programme Option 1

This programme has been designed for our most able students who aim to attend Oxford, Cambridge or another top UK or International university, or an extremely competitive degree course such as medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.

Requirements:

8 or more separate GCSE passes at grade B or above in a wide range of subjects - including English and Maths – with GCSE passes in those subjects at A* to A grades.

What you will study:

You may choose 4 AS courses. We would recommend 3 or 4 A Level ‘facilitating’ subjects along with our specialised High Achievers’ tutorial and enrichment programme.  This will include opportunities to visit Cambridge, application to Supported Progression, individual academic mentor etc.

Advanced Achievers Study Programme Option 2

This pathway has been designed for our students who aim to attend a university, or enter employment after following traditional A Level courses.

Requirements:

5 or more separate GCSE passes at grade B or above in a wide range of subjects - including English and Maths - with the majority of these at B to C grades. You must also meet any additional criteria for your chosen courses.

You may choose 4 or 3 A Level subjects along with the tutorial and enrichment programme.

This will include opportunities to visit local universities, work with local businesses for work experience and recruitment opportunities, etc.

Vocational Study Programme

This pathway has been designed for our students who do not wish to follow an academic pathway or wish to move into employment or further training after their GCSEs.  Working with New College Durham all students will be offered a programme of study to meet their individual needs ranging from apprenticeships to vocational courses.
